Getting an answer from the Internet abyss
Ellen McGirt on the road to becoming an accidental trailblazer

Self-proclaimed "accidental trailblazer" Ellen McGirt made one of those 360-degree career changes that she has never regretted. Once an art dealer with a lifelong dream of becoming a writer, at the age of 35, McGirt found herself on the road to becoming a stockbroker.
Three thousand miles away from her New York home, McGirt was miserable in her new life in San Diego as the marketing specialist for a mining investments brokerage house. She found the greatest satisfaction speaking with the wives of the largely male clientele of her firm, whom she would meet at trade shows. Those conversations led to the idea of creating a Website about financial matters targeted at women, particularly women with limited financial knowledge.
Once online, McGirt and her financial writing were picked up by bigger fish, like Stockscape.com and AOL. She has created a second site, Ka-Ching for Oxygen Media, which the New York Times called "the strongest among the overall investment sites for women." Now McGirt's talking to Oxygen about becoming an on-air TV presence for their cable programming.
Despite her remarkable career transformation, she still dreams about writing novels. McGirt's greatest strength, as she sees it, is her ability to "keep moving until I get there." It's not about luck, according to McGirt, but about her ability to enjoy the mysterious side of things with "intelligent action."
