  Come Rain or Come Shine
an interview with Jonathan Maslow

by Susan DeMarco

Naturalist, reporter, filmmaker, writer, adventurer -- Jonathan Maslow spends his life distilling and describing the world. So it's not surprising that no one word can describe this intriguing world traveler. As I prepared to interview him, I could hardly wait to hear his stories firsthand -- infiltrating a group of Brazilian guerrillas to get a scoop, leading the KGB on a merry chase through Turkmenistan, taking a hair-raising trip through war-torn Kurdistan (where every patron in the local teahouse had an AK-47 in their hands, even while eating). "You didn't want to drop your fork," he chuckled, "you could get killed!"

So what was this swashbuckling globetrotter thinking about when he chose to become a family man and settle down outside Cape May, New Jersey, as a reporter for the Cape May County Herald? For Jonathan, the earth is a beautiful, complex, and interconnected organism. Nothing is too big or too small to experience and investigate. Even after 51 years, this charming man hasn't lost his boyish sense of joy and wonder. It turns out that I was wrong -- there is one word that describes Jonathan Maslow: explorer.
