Mr. Confrontational
an interview with Alan Dershowitz

Whether you agree or disagree with celebrated defense attorney Alan Dershowitz, it’s hard not to admire the gusto with which he takes on an intellectual fight and the single-mindedness with which he protects the Constitution. As perhaps the most famous protector of the rights of criminal defendants, he’s represented, with equal conviction, the famous (O.J. Simpson and Leona Helmsley) and the obscure (more than 70 Soviet Refuseniks). A prolific author (his latest book is Sexual McCarthyism: Clinton, Starr, and the Emerging Constitutional Crisis), Dershowitz also teaches at Harvard Law School. When I met him there, one wall outside his office was festooned with colorful pictures of flowers and birds, drawn by his young daughter; opposite them were a collection of the more rabid hate letters he’s received over the years. A curious blend of idealism and realism, like Dershowitz himself.
