When Gloria was young she spent summers in Clark Lake, Michigan, and during the remainder of the year traveled the country in a dome-topped trailer as her father bought and sold antiques from Florida to California. She later lived in Toledo, Ohio with her mother, and then while at Smith College in Massachusetts she spent a year studying abroad in Geneva, Switzerland. After college she spent two years studying and as an activist in India, and later settled in New York City.
