Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk chatted with us, below is a transcript of the chat.

Event: Zinezone - Tony Hawk
Date: Thursday, Jun. 17th, 1999
Time: 9:00-9:45pm ET

Transcript:

ZineZone: Good evening everyone! Welcome to ZineZone! Twisting his 6-foot-3 frame into a variety of eye-popping moves, Tony Hawk has been wowing skateboard audiences for 17 years, since turning pro at the tender age of 14. But he's no slouch off the half-pipe, either, heading a successful business, The Birdhouse (www.b-house.com), and producing thrilling videos, such as the recent "The End". As the ESPN X-Games approach it's a good time to ask him all your skateboarding questions. Please join us in welcoming ~*~ Tony Hawk ~*~ Welcome to ZineZone and TalkCity, Tony!

TonyHawk: Thank you! It's good to be back.

SueDM: Welcome, Tony! The ESPN X-Games are coming up. When are you heading out to San Francisco, and which events will you be entering?

TonyHawk: I leave Wednesday night and I will probably be in all the events!

blueyes says: I saw you last weekend on our Disney chat it was great ! I could hear you too, were you nervous?

TonyHawk: That was a live event, so I was a little nervous. I'm not under as much scrutiny now, but there was a lot of pressure there at the Disney event, so it was kind of hard. But it was fun.

guest-migzone says: How long did it take you to really know skateboarding?

TonyHawk: I think it took me at least a year to feel comfortable and realize that I wanted to pursue it.

sk8r4life85 says: Did you know Tim Brauch?

TonyHawk: Yes! He was a friend and I always really liked his style of skating. It was really tragic what happened to him. I know there is a website dedicated to him. By the way, Tim died of a heart attack, not from skating.

guest-Admiral says: I hear you're starring in a major motion picture. Is this true??

TonyHawk: That's news to me! Actually, they used footage of me for some of the motion of Tarzan. But I am not in it.

guest-sweetpotatoe says: How were you chosen to do Tarzan ?

TonyHawk: The head animator's kids are skaters! When he was looking for inspiration for Tarzan's motions, he watched some of the videos the kids had. I must have been in at least one of them.

Ann63 says: Saw you in Richmond, VA. I used to skate when I was 19/20 all the time and you were one of my mentors then, but I of course rode a Sims/Screamer.

TonyHawk: I hope you saw the Richmond competition -- they had an ESPN event there a couple of months ago!

Regend says: Sup Tony, I used to skate in the 80's and lived near Hosoi's mom place in LA. I was wondering if the beef was really just hype between you two or if it was true?

TonyHawk: Christian and I never had any animosity towards each other. The media feels the need to create rivalries just so they can have something to broadcast.

Ann63 says: How come there aren't any girls/women on the circuit skating? I just don't get it - we can rip too you know!

TonyHawk: That's a good question! There are a few all-girl events, and they are getting bigger and better every year! And I think they do have (at least last year they had) a girl's event at the X-Games, but it wasn't broadcast.

guest-sweetpotatoe says: Do you want your kids to follow in your path?

TonyHawk: I just want them to do what makes them happy. Right now skating is what Riley is focusing on.

PumaGirl991 says: Boxers or briefs?? LoL…j/k. When do you think that you will be sick of skating?

TonyHawk: I don't think I will ever be sick of it! But I think my body might not be able to take the abuse I put it through. But I will always be wearing boxers.

blueyes says: What types of things do you want in your future?

TonyHawk: I would just like to see skating more accepted, and to have more opportunities for skating, such as skate parks and events. And I would like to see skating have more longevity because it has always come and gone in waves of popularity.

Killer_Beezz says: OK Tony, when is your b-day?

TonyHawk: May 12th, 1968.

KING_PARANOID says: Tony, do you think skateboarders are influenced a lot by music?

TonyHawk: Well, I think everyone draws inspiration from somewhere. I think that skaters are definitely more into their music then a lot of athletes are. It is much more important to them. But I wouldn't say there was one particular type of music that was only associated with skating.

guest-girlskater says: Hey Tony, I know you're an entrepreneur and all, but how'd you branch out into the world of videogames? I saw Tony Hawk's Pro Skater at E3 and it is sooo phat!

TonyHawk: Activision actually. A few different companies had approached me at the same time to be involved in the video game, and Activision's sample was already on the right track. So I chose to work with them and it's really exciting! It's gotten MUCH better since E3. And it will be released in October.

sbw2631 says: Do you know Randy Murray - he skates for Razors??????

TonyHawk: I'm not really sure! I've probably seen him at events.

Beffie says: How is it that you never seem to lose your "spunk" and creativity as you get older?

TonyHawk: Innovation is what has always kept my drive going. As long as I keep trying new stuff, then it keeps me excited.

Hawk_chick: Now that you're older and have done so much, any thoughts about going to college? If so, what would you like to study?

TonyHawk: If anything, I would study video editing so that I could master my Media 100 and feel more comfortable on it then I do now. Currently, I don't have time!
