ZZ: You've produced and even re-edited many hundreds of episodes of the Neighborhood. But you still create new episodes every year. What keeps you coming back to the studio when you've already created such a great body of work?
FR: I just love to work with people who are part of the Neighborhood. I mean, we kind of assemble as a family. And I just look forward to the days when Betty Aberlin will come in from New York and Michael Horton will come in from California, and Joe Negri will come in from the South Hills [Laughter] and Chuck Aber and Maggie Stewart. And now we have Michael Moricz as our musical director. There's something so engaging about playing with your friends.
ZZ: Your company is called Family Communications and you really have surrounded yourself with a creative family, both in the office and in the studio.
FR: Sure, and you're one of them. I've seen so many people develop through the Neighborhood. There's just such a joy for me to watch them develop.
ZZ: Develop in their work?
FR: In their work and in themselves. You know, they just flower. For instance, Carole Switala, who does the voice of Anna Platypus, just came back from a year in Brazil and brought this little wooden parrot on a stick. And she said, "I thought King Friday's birds might enjoy a friend from Brazil." Well, I just thought that was so sweet. And you know, there are just people everywhere who want to come and be part of it.
