BUSTing out all over
Two zine queens tell their story

Finally! A ZineZone interview that's actually about zines. No, not your personal online zine, but something a little more famous: BUST, the raucous and raunchy feminist bi-annual that's forced even traditional women's mags to take notice.
I talked with co-editors Marcelle Karp and Debbie Stoller, who founded BUST in 1993, along with Art Director Laurie Henzel. Little did they imagine, as they stapled together those first Xeroxed pages, that they'd have an influence on hundreds and thousands of women their age and younger, not to mention the entire magazine industry.
BUST is irreverent, smart, sexy and thought-provoking. Its editors are also major contributors. Under the byline "Celina Hex," Debbie Stoller writes thoughtful and funny essays on women's issues and "girl culture." Stoller has also written for George, Ms., The Village Voice, and New York Newsday, and pens "The XX Files," a regular column about women and pop culture for the online version of Shift magazine. She pays her rent as a multimedia producer, and holds a Ph.D. in the Psychology of Women from Yale University.
As "Betty Boob," Marcelle Karp is known for insightful profiles of major women celebrities and for her tireless research into vibrator technology. She also writes for Spin, Details and Jane -- "about the zeitgeist of all things girl." When not building BUST, Karp is an award-winning television producer and director for such clients as Fox, HBO and Lifetime.
You must, you must, you must meet the girls behind BUST!
