an interview with Susan Kare

by Arthur Greenwald

It may be hard to believe, but computers once displayed only text.

Susan Kare didn't quite invent the screen icons you see today, but she endowed them with clarity and personality. Kare first worked this magic as a member of the original Apple Macintosh team. Ever since then she's been designing icons and graphic interfaces for nearly every major computer and software company.

Kare grew up in North Carolina and suburban Philadelphia where one of her high school classmates was Andy Hertzfeld, who later drafted her onto the Mac Team. A graduate of Mt. Holyoke College, Kare also holds a Ph.D. in Art History from NYU.

ZineZone's Arthur Greenwald sat with Kare in her home near San Francisco's Presidio, where she and her family had just returned from a ski vacation. Kare talks about inspiration, technology, and picking the perfect pixel. She also shares how technology helped her meet her husband -- a romantic tale of love even before first sight!
