Thinking different
an interview with Richard Saul Wurman

At the age of 26, after the publication of his first book, Richard Saul Wurman began pursuing his passion of making information understandable. Since then, this cartographer, graphic designer, and information architect has written more than 65 books that bring clarity to a myriad of subjects. His Access Guides and his breakthrough book, Information Anxiety, became road maps for those of us lost in the black hole between data and knowledge.
In 1984, Wurman organized what he calls the "wildly eclectic conference of thinkers and doers." Every year since, the TED conferences -- made up of people from the fields of Technology, Entertainment, and Design -- bring together a dynamic group of speakers who interact, energize and provoke an audience that is interested in the fast-changing world of communication. Since the first conference in 1984, TED speakers have introduced many revolutionary products: that year, the original Macintosh made its first public appearance at TED, and the JAVA programming language, Adobe's Photoshop software and Wired magazine premiered at subsequent TED conferences.
