Personal Perspectives on Joy, Luck and Life
A candid conversation with novelist Amy Tan
by Arthur Greenwald
|
| |
If you know Amy Tan only as the Chinese-American author of The Joy Luck Club, prepare to be surprised. At turns pragmatic and mystical, Tan’s subsequent novels, The Kitchen God’s Wife and The Hundred Secret Senses, resonate with the loving reflections of a daughter, a wife, a loyal friend, and, most especially, a writer.
Amy Tan takes none of those relationships for granted. In daily life, as in her work, she lovingly analyzes the tragedies and fortunes of youth, as well as lessons learned from departed friends. Though grateful for the advantages of fame, Tan labors to keep its distractions at bay, accepting only certain invitations to write movies, produce animated TV shows, and sing in a rock band. In our conversation, Tan describes her strong identification with other "new writers," and the rituals that keep her writing.
And fire up that media player! You’re going to see Amy performing in a leather teddy with her fellow Remainders -- not to mention an exclusive introduction to her constant companions, Bubba and Lili.
