Plympton spends most of his time at the drawing table, but he also travels quite a bit to animation festivals. "There's a film festival in every city in this world, and almost fifty percent of them want me to come for a visit. They take very good care of you as a filmmaker," he says. "It's like being a celebrity."

Plympton recently took a "fun" first-time trip to Portugal and will soon be off to Berlin, Germany, and Charleston, South Carolina. But topping his list is the Annecy International Festival of Film, held each May in the French Alps. "It's a beautiful, old, 15th century French town up in the hills on a lake," says Plympton. "All the greatest animators go there every year: Nick Park, Will Vinton, Tim Burton. You sort of hang out and drink wine and eat great food and watch wonderful animated movies."
