Create Your Own Zine: Personal Zine Basics

Naming your zine
After you've become a ZineZone member, the next step in building a zine is to name it. The zine name appears at the top of your table of contents in the left-hand frame. (For example, if you look in the table of contents here in our Help section, you'll notice the name of this zine is "ZineZone Help.") This is the name under which your zine will appear in our library, should you choose to publish it. Don't worry about getting bored with your zine name; you can always change it later.

Zines are made up of topics, which help organize your content and which appear in the table of contents in the left hand frame. Topics are then populated with links to other sites or with content dynamically retrieved with "filters." Once you've named your zine, begin populating it with content from our library, your own Internet bookmarks, or other filters and links.

What are filters?
Excellent question. A "filter" is an agent that scans the Web to find the content you want. They automatically scan parts of the Web -- at whatever interval you specify (once a day, once every two days, once a week)-- for the information most valuable to you. Filters are the most powerful part of your zine because they automatically search and browse the Web for you, keeping your zine up-to-date and letting you spend your time enjoying the content, rather than searching for it. By using keywords to narrow down search results, filters return the most relevant content related to your interests, instead of the mess of unrelated links you get from search engines. What are links?
Filters are not the only factors at play in zines. Straight links -- that is, a direct URL link to another site in your table of contents (like CNN.com or ESPN.com) -- are useful for the Web sites you use most frequently or those you know will always be relevant. You can easily add straight links to your zine while you build. And, the Bookmark Importer, one of our zine building tools we'll explain a little later, moves your existing Internet bookmarks directly into your zine with a quick click. For more info on our Bookmark Importer, click here.

Cool. How do I create a filter?
Well, don't get ahead of yourself. There are a couple of steps to go through before you get there. (But if you're really gung-ho and want to get started building a filter ASAP, click here.)

So what do I do next? The next step is to begin populating your zine -- either with the content already in our editor zines or by adding your own stuff.
